BIOS OF SPEAKERS:
Prof. Patricia Casey: Professor of Psychiatry
Professor Patricia Casey is one of Ireland’s best-known and respected psychiatrists and is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry in UCD. She was a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin, before moving to the position of Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry at the Hermitage Clinic in 2021. She has a vast experience in general Psychiatry and Mental Health issues, including Adjustment Disorders, Depression, Stress, Self harm and Suicide, Capacity Assessments and Psychiatric care for Obstetric and Gynaecology patients.
Professor Casey has published 14 books and is the author of over 120 peer reviewed papers in International Journals. She previously edited BJ Psych Advances for the Royal College of Psychiatrists, London for 12 years, and is a regular contributor to the media.
Dr. Wilhelm Freiherr von Hornstein: Palliative Care Consultant, Cavan General Hospital
Dr Freiherr is Consultant Physician in Palliative Medicine leading the Specialist Palliative Care Service Cavan & Monaghan since 2009. He previously worked for 3 years years leading the Meath Palliative Care Service in Navan.
He was previously a lecturer in Palliative Medicine for the Medical Council Südbaden in Germany, and between 1995 – 2006 a onsultant Physician in Anesthesia, Pain Medicine and Palliative Medicine at the Klinik für Tumorbiologie at the University of Freiburg in Germany. Between 1984 – 1995 with the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine University of Münster in Germany, he established the first pain clinic in Germany.
Dr Freherr is former Chairperson (for 9 years) of the charity “Hospizgruppe Freiburg e.V. ”
Dr Yuan Yi Zhu: Assistant Professor, International Relations and International Law
Dr Yi Zhu is Assistant Professor (universitair docent) of International Relations and International Law Leiden University and a Research Associate at the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Constitutional Law and Legal Studies.
He has been a vocal and respected critic of the Assisted Suicide legislation currently being proposed in the UK, and has, with other legal experts, addressed the lack of safeguards and serious flaws in the assisted suicide proposals.
His research focuses on international relations: the relationship between international law and the international order in a historical perspective – while also researching public law and political history.
His work has won the Barbara W. Tuchman Prize for Best Paper in Historical International Relations by a Graduate Student and the English School Junior Scholar Award from the International Studies Association, as well as the Asian Society of International Law Young Scholar Prize – and is a legal columnist at The Critic and a regular book reviewer for The Times. He has also written for The Mekong Review, The National Post, The Spectator, The Telegraph, The Times, and Unherd – and his work has been cited in the British, Canadian, and French parliaments, as well as by media on every continent.
Maria Steen: Barrister, writer, mother, and a high-regarded media commentator
Mrs Steen is a qualified barrister, and renowned and much-sought-after commentator. A spokeswoman for the Iona Institute, Maria Steen has been to the fore in most of the high-profile debates on key social issues in this country.
Her participation in the recent referendum debates on Family and Care (women in the home) were seen as pivotal moments in the campaign.
She is a highly-respected debater and speaker, and has represented the right-to-life position on countless media platforms and current affairs programmes including RTÉ, BBC, Virgin Media, Newstalk and more, while writing opinion for the Irish Times, Irish Independent, Gript and others.
Lucy McDonald: nurse and advocate
Lucy McDonald is a nurse and community advocate who will share with the conference a personal testimony on the devastating impact of assisted suicide.
