A “porn workshop” featuring ‘porn alphabet games’ is being advocated by a leading campaigner for a new Sexual Education programme for school children. A selection of potential terms to be explained in workshops was posted by Kate Dawson of NUIG, a porn studies advocate and sexual educator, on her Twitter feed.
In a tweet – since deleted – Dawson said “interesting morning exploring #porn in our #PornLiteracy workshop.” “The porn alphabet is a great way to gain insight into the level of knowledge/engagement a group has. #sexeducation #SexEdBill,” Ms Dawson tweeted. The hashtag #SexEdBill is being used by campaigners, such as Ruth Coppinger TD, to drive support for a more explicit – and mandatory – sex-education programme in schools.
The Galway researcher has been to the fore in seeking radical changes to sex-education programmes, insisting that school children must be made “porn literate” so that they can engage better with pornography, and telling the This Morning programme that she believes 8 year olds should be taught about self-pleasure.
Dawson is a key team member for Be Wiser – the HSE funded programme targeting primary and secondary schools with sex- ed programmes in the West of Ireland. She has also been given a platform on RTE and other Irish media platforms to push for ‘porn literacy’.
Dublin mum Aoife Collins said parents were horrified to see the tweet revealing the content of “porn workshops” in the context of sex education in schools. “As a parent, looking at the role that pornography plays in violent male on female murders, I don’t want porn normalised for my children in school,” she said. “I think most parents would be horrified to see this workshop rolled out in classes.”
Other parents weighed in on Twitter describing the workshop as “absolutely gross” and “creepy”. “Just get Gary Glitter and special guest Rolf Harris to teach it,” posted one.
